Sankofa is a symbol of the Akan people from Ghana and Ivory Coast in West Africa. The word Sankofa symbolizes the recuperation and valorization of African culture. Sankofa means, "go back and take." In other words, return to your roots and build on them and in doing so move forward and prosper. The Asante of Ghana use a bird in flight with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back to represent this idea.
